In dedication to celebrated actor and composer Ryuichi Sakomoto (The Revenant, The Last Emperor), who passed away this year, join us for a special 40th anniversary screening of Nagisa Oshima’s 1983 Palme d’Or-nominated portrait of resilience, pride, and friendship.
Starring David Bowie in one of his greatest roles, alongside SWIFF Festival Patron Jack Thompson, Tom Conti, and Takeshi Kitano, in his feature acting debut.
Japanese-occupied Java, 1942, Captain Yonoi (Ryuichi Sakamoto) leads a P.O.W camp with his only connection to his prisoners lying in the empathetic, multilingual John Lawrence (Tom Conti) and the abrasive spokesman Capt. Hicksley (Jack Thompson). When a recently captured Major Jack Celliers (David Bowie) arrives, Yonoi suddenly develops a conflicted affection. As Celliers fights for small freedoms for the prisoners, Yonoi struggles to punish or eliminate his crush, causing a restlessness in his ranks that reaches boiling point.
Featuring a heart-aching score for the ages by Ryuichi Sakomoto, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is a truly special collaboration of powerhouse artists and an essential anti-war gem that stays with the heart.
With special guest Jack Thompson in attendance.
