Borne of his own brush with death, Vortex, is an incredibly nuanced and devastating masterpiece, that, alongside Haneke’s Amour, sits at the top of the genre.
Starring Italian cult director, Dario Argento (who at the age of 80 excels in his first ever acting role) and French film royalty Françoise Lebrun, as a couple living with dementia in an overstuffed apartment in Paris. Both exist together and separately, an idea that is expressed further using split-screen effect. Their bond erodes as the disease progresses, forcing the couple to reconcile with their mortality.
