Deliver my soul from the sword, my darling from the power of the dog.

In celebration of Jane Campion’s much anticipated return to cinema, SWIFF screens this year’s most highly awarded film, The Power of the Dog – presented as it were intended, in Cinemascope.

Set in 1920s Montana, young widow Rose (Kirsten Dunst) moves onto a cattle ranch with her son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and her new husband George (Jesse Plemons). There, she is tormented by the bullying ways of George’s brother, Phil (a formidable Benedict Cumberbatch). Phil’s violent and ill-tempered manner is in direct opposition to Rose’s gentle, kind nature, and the tension between the two reaches boiling point.

Proving once again that she is one of today’s greatest filmmakers, Campion delivers a fascinating study of masculinity and internal torment, rendered with stunning cinematography by Ari Wegner (Zola, SWIFF'22), a disorienting score by Jonny Greenwood, and a terrific ensemble cast.

Nothing short of extraordinary. An indecently powerful Western” - The Times
