“It takes a lot of time and money to look this cheap, honey.”- Dolly Parton
A young dancer faces the realities of Las Vegas show business as she claws her way from strip joints to stardom – in one of the most notorious films of the 90’s. Running from a troubled past and possessed of a raw and riveting dancing talent, Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) quickly attracts the attention of star showgirl Cristal (Gina Gershon) and ambitious entertainment director Zack (Kyle MacLachlan). As complex bonds form between them, Nomi is drawn deeper into a world of passion and power where everything–and everyone–has a price.
Verhoeven’s glittering vivisection of the star-is-born trope has seen a morphing public perception over time. Panned on release (Verhoeven became the first director to accept his Razzie in person), to being revalued as a ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ camp classic, Showgirls has now experienced a contemporary reputation as a misunderstood satirical gem, well ahead of its time.
“Undoubtedly the think-piece object d’art of its time.” – Slant
