The Yazidi refugee diaspora from Northern Iraq, caused by ISIS/Daesh, is a powerful and important modern-day story. When Daesh stormed through Sinjar province, it stunned the world, their forces murdering Yazidi men and taking away Yazidi women as sabaya, a word meaning “female prisoner of war” but regularly understood as “sex slave”.

Thousands of women have escaped capture, displaced to Al-Hol Camp on the Syrian side of the border, a tent city housing 73,000 displaced people, serving as a temporary safe haven for many ex-sabaya. But when and how can they return home? From the depths of tragedy rises profound compassion. Mahmud and Ziyad run the Yazidi Home Centre, working tirelessly to return thousands of Yazidi ex-sabaya women home to their families.

Hogir Hirori’s brings an important story to the broader world about the callousness of destruction and humanity’s redemption through compassion.

In Arabic and Kurdish with English subtitles.
