SWIFF’22 is honoured to host the World Premiere of award-winning Australian director Jolyon Hoff’s (The Staging Post, SWIFF’18) epic new film, That Was Then, This is Now, with Australia's premiere surf film composers Headland - performing as a 6-piece ensemble an electrifying original soundtrack live on stage.

Big screen surf films at SWIFF are a given. For SWIFF’22, something special is here. The Surf Film Archive, Light Sound Art Film, and SWIFF have teamed up with Headland to create a pulsing audio-visual experience celebrating the birth of Australia’s Surf Culture.

Before Crocodile Dundee became Australia’s cultural identity to the world for decades, bronzed Aussies surfing epic breaks were our national identity – seen around the world thanks to Australia’s pioneering surf filmmakers. Over the past 18 months, The Surf Film Archive have been painstakingly restoring and remastering those Australian and New Zealand original surf films, uncovering remarkable never-seen-before footage, preserving these influential moving pictures for future generations.

In this not-to-be-missed live music and film screening event, Headland (previously live at SWIFF’20) perform an original and unique soundtrack to the very best of the archives’ stunningly restored surf visuals. Big breaks. Big surfers. Big journeys. All restored in glorious 4K.

This is Australian surfing – live and loud on stage.

Suitable for ages 12+ (mild nudity).
