History meets patisserie in this extravagant feast for the senses, from director Laura Gabbert (City of Gold), exploring the mouth-watering intersection between food, culture, and history.
Documenting the collaboration between world-renowned chef Yotam Ottolenghi and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Gabbert follows five visionary pastry chefs as they work to craft a decadent food gala inspired by the sumptuous exhibit ‘Visitors to Versailles’. The chefs create a true feast of Versailles complete with a cocktail whirlpool and posh jello shots, architectural mousse cakes, chocolate sculptures, swan pastries, and even an edible garden.
Recruiting a veritable who’s who of the patisserie world (the inventor of the cronut, for example), Ottolenghi also reflects on the past and the unique decadence of the French Monarchy. Positioning The Met event as both an expression and critique of excess, he compares the past to the present, finding in both a balance of exclusion and community – not to mention revolution.
