The milk of human kindness

Kelly Reichardt (Certain Women, Meek’s Cutoff, Wendy and Lucy) makes a much-anticipated return to the Western genre in this remarkably endearing masterpiece about two settlers carving their own path, and one incredibly photogenic cow.

Reichardt turns her uniquely patient, perceptive lens again on the Pacific Northwest, this time following two travellers on the run from a band of vengeful hunters in the 1820’s. Neither one fitting the rough-hewn mould of an American settler: the loner and skilled chef ‘Cookie’ Figowitz (John Magaro) and idealistic Chinese immigrant, King-Lu (Orion Lee) quickly fall in step with one another, forging a lasting friendship as collaborators on a brilliant business idea – Cookie will bake breads unlike the Frontier has ever seen, with Lu as the entrepreneurial salesman. The final ingredient in their scheme is milk, sourced under cover of darkness of a nearby wealthy landowner’s prized milking cow.

Wowing audiences at Telluride and Berlin Film Festivals, and winner of over 22 film awards, First Cow, is both tranquil and dazzling, two qualities that blossom under Reichardt’s gentle and masterful touch.
