Bangarra is a Wiradjuri word for making fire, and over the 30 years of its existence, the Bangarra Dance Theatre has started a blaze that burns fiercely. A compelling and vivid celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lived experience and storytelling, Firestarter charts the story of the Page brothers, Stephen, Russell and David, who took a newly born dance company and transformed it into a First Nations cultural powerhouse.

With a wealth of insightful interviews, the vibrant Bangarra dancers, touching home movies and more, directors Wayne Blair (Top End WeddingThe Sapphires) and Nel Minchen (Matilda & MeMaking Muriel) chart the parallels between Bangarra’s story and Australia’s political history.

Looking through the eyes of the three brothers, Firestarter explores loss and reclamation of culture, the burden of intergenerational trauma, and above all, the power of art as a messenger for social change and healing.
