Motherhood versus the motherland in Andrei Konchalovsky’s rage-filled political drama - rich with historical detail and grand in scope of an infamous 1962 Soviet massacre and its attempted cover-up.

USSR, June, 1962. Lyuda (Julia Vysotskaya) is a true Stalinist. But now, under Kruschev, food prices are rising, grocery queues are longer, and workers’ wages are falling. A perfect storm for civil upheaval is born in the small town of Novocherkassk. The town’s workers take to the streets, teetering on the edge of revolt, escalating, with tensions rising in this crucible of discontent.

Filmed in stark monochrome, and presented in tall Academy ratio, Dear Comrades! tells a powerful and complex truth that no amount of rhetorical bluster could paper over.

In Russian with English subtitles.
