WINNER · GRAND PRIX · CANNES
NOMINEE · PALME D’OR · CANNES
A rattling, freezing train enroute to the arctic port of Murmansk circa 1990’s serves, as the setting for this masterful and inventive meet-uncute road trip.
Unwashed hair and bulky backpack in tow, Finnish Archaeology student Laura is on her way to examine ancient petroglyphs, a fitting conclusion to her study in Moscow. In a cramped sleeper cabin, she meets Ljoha, a loutish Russian worker on his way to report for duty at a nearby mine. Although worlds apart, cracks appear in the facades, allowing them to recognise the deeper vulnerabilities in one another.
“…the humdrum and heartswelling…evokes a powerful nostalgia for a type of loneliness we don’t really have any more, and for the type of love that was its cure.” - Variety
In Russian and Finnish with English subtitles.
