An icy femme fatale. A killer cop. An all-timer interrogation scene.

Creating huge controversy when it premiered back in 1992 for its overt sexuality – Paul Verhoeven’s sleek and daring erotic thriller proved a blockbuster smash for the genre and catapulted its commanding lead actors towards Hollywood stardom.

Michael Douglas plays troubled police detective Nick Curran, seduced into a series of cat-and-mouse mind games by Sharon Stone’s Catherine Tramell, a cool, Hitchcock-blonde crime novelist with a penchant for sleeping with murderers and who may or may not be one herself.

Revelling in the story’s ambiguity, Verhoeven creates a world in which sex is both unbelievably hot and charged with menace, creating a top-quality guilty pleasure. In honour of its 30th anniversary, SWIFF presents a razor-sharp 4K restoration of the original release neo-noir, supervised by Verhoeven himself. If you didn’t find the film boundary-pushing before, try seeing it on the big screen.
