Following the death of her grandmother, who doubled as hometown matriarch, Teresa returns to arid Brazilian outback village, Bacurau. The community is in dire straits. With resources running low and mobile signal basically non-existent, it’s clear the people have been abandoned by their government.

After the sinister discovery that Bacurau has been erased from any digital map or GPS, a group of affluent tourists turn up, led by Michael (Udo Kier, The Painted Bird, SWIFF’21) ready to hunt, and it’s not the capybaras they are hunting. To survive the onslaught, the townspeople must mount their defence.

Directed by Brazilian auteur Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, Bacurau blends brutal, genre hybrid thrills, borrowing elements of western, revenge, sci fi and adventure, with dark satire, observing the lingering shadows of Portuguese colonialism still felt throughout Brazil today.
