Some life events are so powerful they are defined by “then” and “now”. For Mathew (Tyriel Mora, The Castle, Book Week SWIFF'19), a sensitive near-retiring real estate caring for his mentally incapacitated wife, it’s the car crash that killed his daughter Sarah (Georgia Adamson) and Indigenous son-in-law Jayden (Damion Hunter). The crash spared his grandson, Ari (newcomer Robert-Joseph Slockee), who is cared for by Jayden’s mother Francine (an electrifying Elly Chatfield).

With a knock at the door, Francine breaks the news to Mathew that she is terminally ill – and that, without any other family, Ari is now his ward. At over 60 years old , Mathew is suddenly forced back into fatherhood, reconciling racial tensions within his own household and the responsibility of raising his grandson and connecting him with his Aboriginal culture – without any understanding of his own.

Shot in the Blue Mountains, Smoke Between Trees is a gentle and lyrical film holding a mirror to Australia’s racial tensions, immersing and educating audiences in Aboriginal customs, traditions, and rites.
