Sweeping across three eras of German history, lauded director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (Oscar-winning The Lives of Others) follows the life of a visionary artist through love and loss, inspired (perhaps controversially) by the revered artist Gerhard Richter.

In post-war East Germany, artist Kurt Barnert (Tom Schilling) is haunted by the disappearance of his aunt Elisabeth during the Nazi regime of his childhood. Called to capture the bravery of the working class of East Germany, Kurt struggles to find his particular artistic vision when he enjoys freedom of expression in West Germany. The film's core is a beautiful and tragic love story, as Kurt is drawn to fashion Student Ellie Seeband (Paula Beer, Transit SWIFF’19). The two have an unbreakable bond, tested by Ellie’s Nazi doctor father, who has his own heartbreaking links to Kurt’s story.

A musing on artistic vision, a historical epic, a passionate love story and a vital coming-of-age tale, Never Look Away is purest cinema; a double winner at Venice, a nominee for the FIPRESCI prize and the second German film to ever hold multiple Oscar nominations.

“It’s about the biggest themes (art, war, love, death), it’s emotionally overwhelming, its dialogue is lapidary, its musical score transporting. It’s one of the best films of the decade.”
